A gallery visitor once described Motoko’s work as music captured in canvas—a symphony of colour, shapes, patterns, textures and luminosity. Her 2012 collection extends her compositions into the realm of water and light. The crest of a wave, a shimmering pond teeming with life, a reflective pool that mirrors the colours of life—these images were Motoko’s source of inspiration for this new body of work. In addition to her large canvases, waterscapes that appear “frozen in time,” Motoko is also introducing a new collection of small-scale encaustic paintings. “Encaustic painting is an ancient art form using a mixture of beeswax and damar resin,” Motoko explains. “Fluidity, translucence, warmth, and luminosity are qualities I find interesting in this form. It is wonderfully versatile to work and experiment with, especially in adding sculptural elements and other media.”
